Chronology
Following the events of “Batman” (2022), Oz Cobb, aka The Penguin, attempts to take over the underworld in Gotham. Colin Farrell and Christine Milioti talk about how they got used to the image while filming “Penguin”. Colin Farrell fought hard to have his version of the Penguin smoke tobacco in Batman (2022), but to no avail. However, in his own series, the character is portrayed as a casual tobacco user who prefers cigars.
The tone and atmosphere are conveyed with absolute precision
An umbrella falls and the logo changes to the Warner Bros. logo. Graham Norton & Guests presents: Lady Gaga/Demi Moore/Colin Farrell/Richard Ayoade/Jack Savoretti (2024). Dirty, grimy and dark, but Farrell is able to capture that spark of charm that made Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano.
Where to start with Farrell
There’s a similarity to a soprano, especially in the tone. There’s a lot of darkness in this first episode, but there are still comedic moments that fit the tone without detracting from it. Amazing is the right word. I love seeing talented actors fully commit to roles like this, and the makeup/CG or whatever they did to physically transform him into a penguin not only passes the eye test, but looks incredibly realistic.
And Farrell, as an actor, is completely immersed in this role
There’s always the risk that if the makeup isn’t good enough or is a little off, it can be completely distracting. With Penguin, it adds to the game and the overall quality of the show, because it’s such a good piece of work. I may be a little biased because he was one of my favorite actors before this show, but I think this will give him the accolades he deserves. I never watch new shows all at once because I like to binge-watch all the episodes, but I wanted to see how this show actually turned out.
