His version focused on the more mythic elements of ancient Rome and would have seen Maximus reach the afterlife to face other souls who have yet to ascend. Eventually, Jupiter and other Roman deities commission him to return to Earth to find and kill Hephaestus, an ancient deity who betrayed them. From there, he is resurrected as a Christian and finds himself traveling back to Rome to stop the spread of Christianity as he crosses paths with the new emperor, Lucius.

The film would have ended with Maximus being cursed to live for eternity, and included a montage of the soldier fighting in the Crusades, World War II, and the Vietnam War, eventually revealing a modern-day Maximus working in the Pentagon in Washington. The studio decided not to move forward with this version, but the script can be read online. Featured in The 7PM Project: July 3, 2024 episode (2024).
And that’s all that seemed good to me
The visuals are stunning, the sets and costumes look incredible. Pedro Pascal is great in every scene, he really sells all the emotions with such subtlety and minimalism. The main character is one of the big problems, he always looks pale, like he’s not really acting and has no real emotions.
I expected worse, but I was blown away by this movie anyway
He should have stolen our hearts from the first scene, but somehow it didn’t happen that way. The film initially needs a little more time for the audience to get to know and love it, to make its motivations more believable, and to make its story more emotionally relatable. The other big problem is the overarching story, Denzel Washington’s character arc is just weird and bloated, the dialogues are generally superficial…
